For example:

• Corrosion type DMs
• Environment Assisted Cracking type DMs (SCC)
• Mechanical Fatigue (piping), HTHA, Embrittlement (Brittle, 885, Sigma Phase, Temper)
• Liner Damage, etc

The list of damage mechanisms and technical modules from API RP 581 is itself derived from the most commonly expected damage mechanisms in the refining and petrochemical industries, as given initially in API 579 and subsequently in API 571.

API 571 is a complementary screening tool in the determination of potential damage mechanisms when performing RBI according to API 580. Based on selected equipment type, material of construction, PWHT, process conditions (fluid, operating pressure, temperature, etc.), the possible damage mechanisms are automatically prescribed.
